Hi there, I'm Elston Tan 👋

My name is Elston. I am a 18 year old passionate and self-directed learner/researcher from Singapore. I am interested in quantum mechanics, deep learning (CV).

I mainly do research into deep learning, playing around with newly published models, open source models and understanding them. However, my interests constantly and rapidly changes and I've gone through topics such as Neuroscience, Quantum Mechanics, Discrete Mathematics, Devops and Scrum.

I not only do in-depth research into deep learning methods and models but I also delve into other topics such as full-stack development, MLOps and deployment so that I have the necessary skills to be an all-rounder especially for hackathons.

As for personal interests and of the topic of what I do in my personal time, I do Muay Thai as a hobby and I love to train my body and mental strength. I also go for AI Conferences when I can to share and gain new ideas and friends. Me and my friends also frequently go for hackathons and competitions.

  • Interning at IHPC (Institute for High Performance Computing) as an AI Research Intern on a project titled, “Teaching AI To Think Like Humans”
  • Developing a dataset for visual reasoning and benchmarking a VQA (Visual Question Answering) model
  • Working on 3 projects under Dr Paritosh Parmar on the topic of visual reasoning

Project Intern

  • Worked in the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) Visual Intelligence division as a Student Researcher and Project Intern
  • Developed, tested and analysed two methods of detecting blurred images
  • Cleaned and modified datasets for testing and training purposes (e.g. gaussian blurring images, reformatting images)
  • Researched different edge operators and developed feature engineering paired SVM model for classification task
  • Tested various CNN architectures for optimized performance on this specific problem (e.g MobileNetV2)
  • Made detailed reports on developments in research every week and presented report to supervisor (worked with numbers and graphs)
